Barkley in the Winner’s Circle- Emerald Downs.com
Denali Sales Grad BARKLEY, a five-year-old chestnut colt by Munnings out of the Medaglia d’Oro mare Numero d’Oro, won the Grade 3 Longacres Mile H. on Sunday, August 12th at Emerald Downs. Barkley scored his 1 ½ length victory in the $200K race against Alert Bay and Oh Marvelous Me, making this his first Graded Stakes win. Capturing what is now his third Longacres Mile victory, trainer Howard Belvoir exclaimed, “This is way up there, and I might need a parachute to come down.” He went on to illustrate Barkley’s win as being one of the greatest and most memorable accomplishments for him in racing thus far.
Jockey Javier Matias rode in for the win aboard Barkley in the midst of a short field, marking his first Mile win out of his 31 total Stakes wins. After a moment on the wrong lead, the pair appeared to lack momentum between Alert Bay and Oh Marvelous Me on the inside rail before correcting and gaining stride, in turn deciding the race with his advance and setting up for the stretch run.

He was titled Emerald Downs Top 3-Year-Old in 2016 after winning the first six races of his career. Bred and raised in Kentucky by Candy Meadows LLC, he was consigned by Denali Stud and purchased for $21K at the 2014 Keeneland September Yearling Sale by current owners Rising Star Stable.
