DENALI GRADS UP FOR TOP HONORS IN NY

The New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. (NYTB) has announced the nominees for the New York-bred Divisional Champions of 2010. New York turf writers, handicappers and chart callers will vote on the winners in each division, and will also choose a New York-bred Horse of the Year.

All the winners and their connections will be honored at NYTB’s Annual Awards Banquet on the evening of April 11, 2011 at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, New York. Also to be honored at the banquet will be New York Broodmare of the Year, Freshman Sire, Steeplechase Champion, Breeder of the Year, and leading New York-bred trainer and jockey.

Denali sales program is represented by Shine Upon in the 3YO Filly category The Congraree filly was bred by Berkshire Stud and sold by Denali at the 2008 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $125,000. Shine Upon won two stakes in 2010 both a Aqueduct: Dreamy Mimi S. on 3/11 and the Jena Jena S. by 4 ½ lengths on Dec. 17.

Three nominees in the Older Male category were sold by Denali:

A Shin Forward, a son of Forest Wildcat bred by Edition Farm and sold at the Fasig-Tipton NY Saratoga Select yearling sale for $125,000. Winner of the $2.3 million Mile Championship (Jpn-I) A Shin Forward also won or placed 3 other Group races in Japan in 2010.

Haynesfield bred by Barry Weisbord and Margaret Santulli was sold by Denali for $100,000 at the 2007 Keeneland September sale. The son of Speightstown won the Grade II Suburban H. in July and the Jockey Club Gold Cup-G1 in October, both run at Belmont Park. He ended the year with second in the Cigar Mile-G1 at Aqueduct.

Gallagher’s Stud bred Icabad Crane, also sold by Denali at the 2006 Saratoga August sale for $65,000. Winner of the King’s Point H. in March of 2010 the Jump Start runner was also beaten a neck in the Evan Shipman S at Saratoga in July.

Two graduates from Denali sales are nominated in the Older Female category and in the Turf Female category:

Chestoria, by Chester House and bred by Berkshire Stud and Oak Cliff Breeders Inc., the $20,000 2005 Keeneland September yearling won the Mount Vernon S. for NY Breds in May and placed in four other stakes in 2010.

You Go West Girl, by Mr. Greeley and bred by Gallaghers Stud is a $62,000 Keeneland 2005 September sale graduate. She won the Ticonderoga S. at Belmont and placed in two stakes at Saratoga last year.

In the Turf Male category Older Male nominee A Shin Forward is up against another Denali graduate, Straight Story. The son of Giants Causeway was bred by Gallagher’s Stud and is raced by Richard Santulli and was a $400,000 2007 Keeneland September graduate for Denali.
Straight Story won two NY turf stakes both at 1 1/8m, the West Point S. and the Mohawk S.
